Guest Speaker Stuart Symons, Modernist Adelaide

Modernist Adelaide: Discovering our jet-age architecture

Stuart Symons Web

From a cult Instagram following to a series of sell-out tours and a bestselling book, Modernist Adelaide historian Stuart Symons is helping Adelaide better appreciate its mid-century heritage.

Stuart will share how his passion for our city’s modernist architecture has built a substantial online following, engaged thousands of people at his architecture tours and events, and culminated in the publication of the first large-scale book about Adelaide’s mid-century architecture.

Stuart will also reveal some of his favourite modernist buildings in Adelaide – from the well-known to those hidden in plain sight. This talk through time will appeal to anyone with a love of Adelaide’s architecture and design, history or just looking up and seeing the beauty in our everyday built environment.

The social evening will be held on Tuesday, May 18th, 5:30 for 6pm at the Waverley House on the grounds of St.Andrews Hospital, 360 South Terrace

‘Understanding Self to Lead Others'

Why do some thrive while others struggle?

a Social Evening with Homz Umrigar

HomzUmrigar

Most of us all are all too familiar with the following: One leader succeeds with an inventive, self-motivated team that sparks innovation and creativity. Another successfully navigates massive change stemming from a move into new markets. But put the first one, who is loath to micromanage, at the helm of the second team and things start to unravel. Similarly, put the second one, who thrives on rigorous protocol, in charge of the free-spirited thinkers of the first team and morale will plummet.

Leadership is an important theme of Rotary, so join us at our May Social evening to hear Homz talk to us about leadership in practice and the importance of context and self-awareness.

Guest Speaker Kate McBride, Tolarno Station

Kate McBride

Kate McBride is a fifth-generation farmer from Western NSW. She was born and brought up on Tolarno Station which is a 500,000 acre sheep property located along the Lower Darling river. In 2020 Kate completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Adelaide University, majoring in management with agriculture and environmental electives. This year she has started a Graduate Diploma in Global Food and Agricultural Business.

Having grown up on the Darling-Barka River and seeing its continual mismanagement in 2017 Kate became a healthy river ambassador and has worked with people from all walks of life fighting for better water management within the Murray Darling Basin. This work led her to becoming an eco-tourism guide for Murray River Walk which broadened her understanding of environmental watering and the Murray River.
