As Defence Minister Christopher was responsible for delivering the $200 billion build-up of Australia’s military capability and for awarding major defence contracts, as well as working to ensure the growth and sustainment of Australia’s defence industry. He worked extensively to strengthen defence ties with Asia-Pacific and major European and Middle Eastern countries.
In the Education and Industry portfolios Christopher was responsible for reforming the National Curriculum, introducing compulsory literacy and numeracy testing for Australian teaching graduates and expanded phonics teaching.

He is an Industry Professor in the University of South Australia Business School specialising in Defence and Space, and chairs the Australia United Arab Emirates Business Council and the International Centre for Democratic Partnerships Foundation. He writes for The Advertiser, is a regular TV panellist, hosts a podcast called Pyne Time, and is in demand as a conference speaker. Married to Carolyn with four children, he still finds time to be an Ambassador for the Adelaide Football Club.
Christopher will be in conversation with David Penberthy at the Club’s regular lunch meeting on Wednesday 30 September.
