Malcolm McInerney has been involved in Humanities Education in South Australia as a teacher and manager in the Department for Education since 1976. Malcolm has supported Humanities teachers through curriculum writing, resource development and the provision of professional learning across Australia.  Currently Malcolm is the manager of the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools program and the Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize in South Australia. Malcolm is also appointed as a Teaching Academic in Humanities Education at the University of South Australia, working with students with the ambition to be humanities teachers in our schools.

In his capacity as the manager of the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools program, Malcolm will talk about the place of civics and citizenship education in South Australian schools. Information will also be provided on current research regarding student knowledge and understanding of civics and their role as citizens in Australian society. Discussion on the genesis, purpose and development of the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools in South Australia will provide background to the efforts being made to improve the capacity of students to be active, informed and responsible citizens. In particular, Malcolm will provide information on the Australian Curriculum for Civics and Citizenship and an outline of the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools in South Australia for 2021.  The talk will aim to encourage attendees to consider their own civics and citizenship knowledge and understandings and how they can support the civics award program developed under the auspice of the Governor of South Australia.
