Guest Speaker: Phil Hoffmann
Phil Hoffmann has an unbiased global vision for the travel and tourism industry.
A proud South Australian who travels the world as an unofficial ambassador flying the flag for both South Australian and Australian tourism he was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012 for his contribution to the Travel and Tourism Industries.
Originally a teacher with an Honours Degree in Chemistry, Phil was also a Senior Lecturer for Staff Development for TAFE (Training and Further Education South Australia). Phil’s academic background sees him forever pushing the boundaries and raising the standards of education and professionalism within the Australian travel and tourism industry. Phil constantly embraces global trends and his best practice stimulates economic growth for his company (Phil Hoffmann Travel) and South Australia. Phil was presented by a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Adelaide in 2013.
Phil Hoffmann ended a four term as Chairman of the South Australian Tourism Commission in 1996 where he created a positive link between the tourism industry and the government. His appointment recognized his credibility within the South Australian business community and the Government of South Australia and acknowledged his commitment to excellence in the travel industry.
Phil Hoffmann was instrumental in setting up the inaugural AFTA (Australian Federation of Travel Agents) Training College and has made a significant commitment and contribution to the professional development of best-practice standards in education and training, through to political and economic issues for the entire Australian travel industry. Phil was an AFTA Director for 13 years, was elected as National President of AFTA serving for six years, and was also awarded Life Membership in 2000. Throughout this period, Phil constantly promoted the professionalism of the travel industry in Australia, and in conjunction with his peers with ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) lobbied airlines and wholesalers alike to work together to raise the levels of integrity and credibility of the global travel and tourism industries.
All of these contributions were achieved while Phil formed his own travel company – Phil Hoffmann Travel – in Adelaide in 1990, to pursue his “quality customer care” philosophy.
Driven by Phil’s genuine passion and energy, Phil Hoffmann Travel has grown dynamically over the past 28 years, from one location with only two staff, to now employing over 220 passionate South Australians in ten branches with an annual turnover of over $150 million; all with an impeccable reputation for award-winning excellence. Whilst not actively seeking awards, Phil Hoffmann Travel has received many accolades from the industry including the AFTA National Travel Industry Association’s Travel Agent of the Year Award on an unprecedented eleven occasions. Other awards recognizing Phil’s business success include American Express Agency of the Year and Small Business Association Awards. Phil is also a Founding Company Director of Cruiseco which is a Sydney based wholesale/fly/cruise Company.
Phil Hoffmann was presented with a Legend Award in recognition of his outstanding service and support to the National Tourism Industry Training Committee in 1999; and again in 2006. Phil has been a Member of ACTA (Adelaide Convention and Tourist Authority) Board, and ardently promotes Australian inbound tourism. Phil Hoffmann is also a Board Member of the Advisory Board for the University of Adelaide Business School.
Phil‘s company, with its family and community focussed culture was also inducted into the Family Business Association Hall of Fame in 2011. This award recognises first generation family businesses that have established themselves as an icon in their industry, and who are an outstanding example of entrepreneurism with a positive influence on the well-being of the state.
Furthermore, without reward or advantage, Phil Hoffmann acts as a mentor to many opposition travel agencies for marketing and best-practice. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Training and Development. With training and education still a passion, Phil voluntarily lectures TAFE Travel and Tourism students and hosts them at his agency to further expand their knowledge and commitment to the industry.
Business acumen aside, Phil Hoffmann is a wonderfully generous benefactor who voluntarily sponsors and hosts not only his large “family” of employees, but also over 50 charities, clubs and associations; thereby improving the well-being of many South Australian communities, families and individuals in need. Phil is an active Ambassador for Minda Incorporated, and provides ongoing advocacy and support for people with an intellectual disability. Phil Hoffmann also actively supports Carry for Kids, and the 2H Project which is a not-for-profit Australian development organisation working with local communities overseas, to bring help and hope for the poor and disadvantaged. Phil is a highly respected icon, not only in the travel and tourism industry in Australia, but also within the wider South Australian community.
To all who know him, Phil Hoffmann is regarded as a loving family man to his wife Alison and four daughters and grandchildren and in his leisure time enjoys a daily swim outside his home at Glenelg Beach. Phil is a Member of the Rotary Club of Adelaide, the Adelaide Club, and has been awarded Life Membership of the Grange Tennis Club and the Port Adelaide Football Club.
Phil’s passion, foresight, innovative thinking, big heart, family focus, and altruistic community commitment are a major asset to the South Australian and national travel and tourism industries, and to the South Australian community.
