Guest Speaker: Mike Milln, Secretary, SA Aviation Museum

Topic: After the Great Air Race; what happened next – a story in itself

Mike Milln was born in England, educated in Australia and had a working life in aviation operational management and policy in Canada and Australia.  He retired in 2014 as aviation policy manager in the State Government’s Department of Transport.

He has been a member of the South Australian Aviation Museum since 1998, and its Secretary since 2013.  There he has further developed his long-held interest in aviation history, and is the author of a two-volume history of the Royal Aero Club of South Australia and numerous articles for various aviation heritage publications.

This year he has been closely involved with the events celebrating the Epic Flight Centenary, including speaking about the Vimy to a range of groups and throughout the History Festival.

The title of his talk today is “Vickers Vimy G-EAOU – what happened next?”  In it he will take up the story where Lainie Anderson left off – that is, after the race, the visit of the aircraft to Adelaide and the deaths of Ross Smith and Jim Bennett. He will relate what happened to the aircraft then, how it ended up at Adelaide Airport and what is planned for its future.
