Guest Speaker: Dr. Amal Randhir Karunaratna
Topic: The work of Rotary Adelaide in Sri Lanka with Rotary Kandy
Dr. Amal Karunaratna is CEO of Breakthrough Business Intelligence, former chairman of the board of directors of Sinhaputra Finance, and the Honorary Consul for the British High Commission in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Breakthrough Business Intelligence has completed projects with companies such as TVS and other small and large organisations. Prior to this, Amal was a consultant to Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Lanka where he was involved with projects with the largest telecommunications firms and fast moving consumer goods firms.
Amal is Rotarian at the Rotary Club of Kandy and has been committed to project managing the installation and oversight of water filtration plants and tube wells in areas in Sri Lanka that are highly affected by chronic kidney disease. Funding and support for the filtration plants have been provided by the Rotary Club of Adelaide.
He was a regular contributor to Lanka Monthly Digest, a monthly Sri Lankan business magazine. One of these articles was translated into a special edition in Sinhala and was the focus of a panel discussion on a Sri Lankan TV program on business. He is a contributor to the Echelon magazine and has also written articles and presented seminars on travel and diving with a specific focus on conservation of wrecks and the marine environment. He was also visiting faculty at the Post Graduate Institute of Management in Colombo.
Previously, he was Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Business at the School of Business Senior at the University of Adelaide. Prior to that, he was Senior Lecturer at the then School of Commerce and Marketing Discipline Head at the Adelaide Graduate School of Business, University of Adelaide. Prior to that he was Lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland and Post Graduate Fellow at Bond University. He has been a visiting faculty member at the AGSM University of NSW, then known as Monash Mt. Eliza Business School and the Graduate School of Business at Sydney University. He retired from his academic role in 2015.
His research activities were in international marketing channels, country of origin, cultural aspects of consumer behaviour and technology development. His research interests have been in International Business, with publications in international journals, including the prestigious Journal of International Business Studies with Prof Douglas Dow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has presented papers in many international conferences and developed decision making tools for teaching and research using commercially available software such as Excel and has been a regular user of computer simulations such as Music to Go from Smartsims in his teaching.
Amal was nominated supervisor of the year in 1999 and awarded lecturer of the year by the Post-Graduate Students Association at University of Adelaide in 2000 and received a commendation for teaching at the School of Commerce in 2006.
Amal was initially trained in Science at Flinders University and obtained an Honours degree in Biochemistry. Later he completed an MBA at the University of Adelaide which was followed by a Masters degree in Commerce at Bond University in Marketing. He completed his PhD at Sydney University. His PhD was in international business where he developed and tested a mathematical model of the exporter-import channel intermediary relationship.
Before entering academia, Amal worked as a sales representative for Ericsson and several small computer retailers while completing his MBA. This was followed by three years as Assistant Manager for Luminis Pty. Ltd. Where he was involved with the establishment of new firms arising from innovations from the University of Adelaide. These activities ranged from negotiating licenses on new technologies to developing business plans and establishing new companies to commercialise innovations. Amal has also operated his own consulting business.
He has expertise in qualitative and quantitative research, statistical analysis and has carried out consultancies in retailing operations, business planning for technology commercialisation and presented executive development courses.
