Guest Speaker: Andrew Zannettino, Professor of Experimental Haematology, The University of Adelaide
Beating blood cancers from bench to bedside: notable advances and future challenges
Professor Andrew Zannettino is the Associate Dean of Research and Professor of Experimental Haematology in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Adelaide. He heads the Myeloma Research Laboratory (MRL) based at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and is a founding member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Group of the Myeloma Foundation of Australia. In addition, he is a board member of the Robinson Research Institute (RRI) and the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH). Professor Zannettino’s research focuses on the molecular and cellular basis for the development of the bone marrow cancer, multiple myeloma. He has authored more than 220 scientific publications and his research has attracted in excess of 30 million dollars in funding. He is also the inventor of patented technologies that underpin the world’s largest cell therapy company, Mesoblast Ltd, which is using stem cell-based therapies to treat a range of diseases including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, graft versus host disease and back pain. He will discuss the symptomatology and treatment of myeloma, the second most common of the blood cancers.
