Rotary - the Future
After almost 100 years of successful operation in Australia and New Zealand, Rotary finds itself at a very significant crossroad. With declining membership over the last ten years (down 13% in Australia and 19% in NZ) and an ageing membership demographic (average age 71), the continued existence of Rotary as we know it in this fast changing world is under considerable threat.
As a consequence the membership value proposition we offer is being reviewed and it has been decided that Rotary Districts across Australia and NZ will be merged to bring the number down from 26 to 14 and even fewer in time. Locally, Districts 9500 and 9510 will be the first to make this historic change, with more than likely an entirely different structure to operate on the local merge date, 1 July 2020.
Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Adelaide D’Arcy Walsh has been appointed Chair of the local combined District Steering Committee which is leading development of a new District structure, and District Governor Elect 2018-19 David Egan has for the last 23 months been leading the process of identifying what has to be done to meet the need for this change in District 9500. Both David and D’Arcy are members of a ten person national Redistricting Taskforce established by RI Director Noel Trevaskis for this purpose.
Redistricting is both a challenging and exciting time for Rotary and the local challenge, as the first two Districts involved, is being supported and watched carefully by Rotary International’s headquarters as a test case for the rest of the world. It is a step towards possible regionalisation rather than the current zone structure in which Rotary is organised, and this presentation about the future from D’Arcy and David is not to be missed.
