Online Meeting with Past President D'Arcy Walsh

ROMAC  -  life changing surgery for children

Join us to hear from PP D’Arcy Walsh about the 3 decades of wonderful work done by Rotary in our region, through ROMAC

ROMAC is the acronym for Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, which is a special program of the Rotary Districts across Australia and New Zealand. It was established 32 years ago as to provide lifesaving and life changing surgery to children from the neighbouring Oceanic countries. Fully supported by the Rotary Clubs and Rotarians from Australia and New Zealand, the program supports 40-50 surgeries each year with over 530 children being treated since 1988.

ROMAC operates through six Regions with our District (9500) being in Central Region. Given his 35 years working around the Asia-Pacific area, D’Arcy was recently invited to Chair the Central Region. He will be explaining how ROMAC operates, highlight some of the recent patients and tell us how Club and Rotarians can support the program.

Online Meeting with ABC TV News Breakfast Presenter and Author...Paul Kennedy

 Sport, Journalism, COVID and Courage!

Paul Kennedy is an experienced journalist, author and TV presenter. He has covered news and current affairs for three television networks and currently, he presents sport on the popular national morning program ABC News Breakfast.

He is also an accomplished author with a number of books including the powerful Hell On The Way To Heaven (co-authored with Chrissie Foster), a key component in the push for Australia’s largest Royal Commission, Storm Cloud, High Stakes and Fifteen Young Men. A married father of three sons and former AFL reserves player, he is now a successful youth sporting coach and health advocate through Facebook page @funcoachmovement

Paul's journalism career began in 1994 when he worked as a copy boy for The Herald and Weekly Times, before moving on to become a news reporter for Network Ten and the Nine Network. Kennedy is now best known for being a sports presenter on ABC Television's long-running breakfast program ABC News Breakfast, having been with the program since its inception in 2008.

Kennedy has been actively involved in Australian rules football having played with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, Frankston Dolphins in Victoria's VFL and with Fitzroy Lions reserve grade in the AFL.

Kennedy has also played with the Morningside and Mount Gravatt Football Clubs in the QAFL and was as a player-coach at Seaford Football Club.

His time at Seaford inspired Kennedy to write and direct a short film called Drug Game, which explored drug-related issues that players and club officials had been faced with. The film was a finalist at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and Kennedy has since been credited with helping rebuild Seaford as a formidable club by creating a family friendly atmosphere at the club when he took over as senior coach in 2003.

Kennedy has also been a coach at Sandringham Football Club and with the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League.

In 2020, at the Frankston Football Club's season launch, President Peter Geddes announced two new No.1 ticket holders were announced, Paul Kennedy from ABC News Breakfast and Sharni Layton from Fox Footy.

n 2010, Kennedy co-authored Hell on the Way to Heaven with Chrissie Foster which investigated cover-ups by the Catholic Church of child sexual abuse, following the abuse of Anthony and Chrissie Foster's two daughters by a Catholic priest. In 2017, Kennedy said co-writing Hell on the Way to Heaven was his career highlight, as he considers the book to be the most important piece of journalism that he has undertaken in his career and was not expecting to do anything of more importance.

Kennedy wrote High Stakes: The Rise of the Waterhouse Dynasty in 2014, which explored the story of the Waterhouse family, who are widely regarded as Australia's best known horse racing family.

In 2016, Kennedy wrote Fifteen Young Men: Australia's Untold Football Tragedy, which detailed the deaths of 15 men, including 14 local footballers, who were killed during a storm in 1892 when their boat capsized off Mornington Peninsula while returning from Mordialloc.

From high finance to local news, backing Naracoorte's new newspaper!!

Michael Waite the founder of Naracoorte Community News, a print newspaper launched in May 2020, is bucking the trend.
As News Limited and Nine Media shut down local and regional newspapers, he has decided to establish a ‘start up’ in his hometown of Naracoorte. From 2008-2012, Michael spent four years with Cascade Investment, L.L.C., the private investment holding company of William H. Gates III, Microsoft Co-founder, where he served as head of accounting for the last two years for the US$60+ Billion investment portfolio. Michael also served as a Director of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

Prior to this Michael was Chief Financial Officer at Julian LeCraw & Company, LLC (now Tribridge Residential) in Atlanta, GA where his responsibilities included strategic planning and execution of accounting, corporate finance, human resources, risk management and information technology across a US$1.5 Billion real estate portfolio.

Michael earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Columbus State University and an MBA from Goizueta Business School at Emory University.

He was a candidate for State Treasurer of Washington state in 2016. And served on the National Board of Trustees for Camp Fire 2018-2019, Board of United Way of King County 2012-2015 and as a member of the Finance (2008-2018), Early Learning (2012-2018) and Audit (2008-2015) committees.

Michael currently serves on the executive committee of the League of Education Voters (Washington state).

Michael was born in Naracoorte, South Australia. He lived in the USA from 1998-2019, including 8 years in Atlanta, Georgia and the last 12 years in Seattle, Washington. He and his wife, Whitney, have three children, Scarlett, Nora and Hazel. Whitney is a paediatrician and worked at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital from 2008-2019.
