Guest Speaker Ms Briony O'Shea, Chair of CORENA
CORENA's Powerful Revolving Fund Model
Briony is a chemical engineer with a Master of Laws in international law, her thesis for which focused on international carbon policy implementation. Having spent her career in the energy industry, her main focus is on renewable energies and future fuels such as hydrogen and biogas to support the transition to a low carbon future. She is particularly interested in the removal of regulatory barriers to the successful transition to future fuels in Australia, and the enabling of a green hydrogen economy to complement Australia’s transition to renewable electricity and to accelerate our transition to net-zero carbon emissions across all sectors.
Briony has been a projects volunteer with CORENA since 2017, and Chair since 2020. She believes that CORENA’s revolving fund model as a means to implement effective climate action is a powerful demonstration of the ability of everyday people to make meaningful change.
CORENA was founded on the belief that everyday Australians from households right across Australia can help tackle the climate emergency by donating to pay for practical projects to reduce carbon emissions immediately.
CORENA’s powerful revolving fund model means that every dollar donated to implement climate projects is repaid to the fund and reused over and over for new projects, to continually increase the impact of the original donation.
Under the CORENA model, community organisations apply for zero-interest loans to pay for projects such as installing solar panels, improving energy efficiency, switching away from fossil gas use, or purchasing electric vehicles. The resultant savings on energy/fuel bills cover the loan repayments. This means they can reduce their carbon footprint at no cost to themselves, and after their loan is fully repaid they reap the additional benefit of having lower operating costs.
