Nutrition Testing and the importance of technology

Graduated in industrial chemistry at the University of Milan, with further studies in economics and management at the Duke University, Marco Baccanti started his career in 1986 as research scientist at Carlo Erba Instruments in Milan, Italy (now Thermo Scientific), filing 4 international patents and developing two innovative analytical instruments, then becoming international sales manager, with extensive traveling for the global launch of his line of innovative equipment.

In 1994 he was nominated Managing Director of “Centuria Science Park” in Cesena, Italy, a private organization participated by government, banks and universities aimed to support the development of the local food technology industrial cluster.

In that period Marco also started serving in the board of the International Association of Science Parks, was then elected Vice President in 2002, President in 2004 and served as IASP board member until 2008.

In 2004 he moved back to Milan as Managing Director of San Raffaele Biomedical Science Park, a large private organization encompassing the Italian biggest private hospital, a research center and a university with several pharmaceutical, biotech and med-tech companies on site.

In 2008 Marco moved to Dubai, where the Government of the UAE nominated him Executive Director of the Dubai Biotechnology Research Park (today Dubai Science Park), the free-zone dedicated to pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. Marco reported to the board of Dubai Holding and to the Cabinet of the government.

Back to Italy in 2010, he ran the Health global business unit of the Technogym group as Managing Director, in Cesena, while also serving in the Leadership Board “Healthy Living” and “Workplace Wellness” of the World Economic Forum, in Geneva, New York and Davos.

In October 2014 he moved to Australia, in Adelaide, where the Government of South Australia appointed him Chief Executive of Health Industries South Australia, the economic development agency for the life sciences sector, reporting to the Minister of Health. 

Since July 2019 he is CEO of Trajan Nutrition, in Adelaide, a branch of the Trajan Scientific and Medical group headquartered in Melbourne, with factories in US and Malaysia, offices in Europe and Japan, engaged in the development and global translation of innovative solutions for nutrition tests.

Marco became Rotarian in 2008, as member of Rotary Club of Dubai (district 2452) and was member of Rotary Club of Cesena (district 2072), from 2010 to 2015.
