Guest Speaker: Trevor McGuirk (President RC Unley)
Medical Health Services for Isolated Communities near Cusco, Peru project
Trevor spent 34 years as a teacher with the Education Department of SA and in the last 10 years of his teaching career he was appointed Principal at Clare Primary School and Seacliff Primary School. After leaving the Education Department he worked in the grain industry for two years with the then SA Cooperative Bulking Handling, spent four years as Manager of Fundraising for Scouts SA, and finally spent three years as Director of Development at Unity College at Murray Bridge.
Trevor has travelled extensively overseas to Europe, (five times), Alaska, Fiji (twice including as a RAWCS volunteer), New Zealand (twice), China, and Peru (six times).
In 2008 Trevor spent eight weeks as a volunteer in Cusco, Peru with an organisation called Peru’s Challenge. In November 2009 he returned to Cusco to distribute Christmas gifts to children who live in poverty in the Andes Mountains near Cusco. The opportunity to do more for these children and their families arose on that trip. Then in August 2011 he organised for a group of Rotarians and their partners to travel to Cusco as part of an exchange program.
In 2015 Trevor travelled to Peru to investigate how a sustainable health care project could be implemented, and in 2017 travelled again to Peru to implement a project having successfully applied for a Global Grant approved in November 2016. In 2018 he travelled to Peru to collaborate with the Rotary Club of Cusco to view at first hand aspects of the project and to write the report required by RI after 12 months of progress.
Trevor was President of the Rotary Club of Stirling Rotary in 2010/2011 and is presently President of the Rotary Club of Unley. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 2011 with a sapphire pin in July 2018. He is a member of the District 9520 Friendship Exchange Committee. And has been Chair of the District 9520 International Services since 2017.
In addition to initiating a Matching Grant and a Global Grant, Trevor has established the “Kids of Cusco Project” – a humanitarian project with the objective of improving the education and health of children - and has raised over $56,000 through funds raising activities.
