Guest Speaker: Don Hopgood, Retired Musician
Dancing with the Yanks and his work with the SA Jazz Archive
Eighty year old Don Hopgood is retired. In fact he has retired three times which makes him a pretty retiring sort of bloke. He was in turn a school-teacher and university tutor, a member of the House of Assembly of the S.A Parliament from 1970 to 1993 with seven years as Deputy Premier, and served a term as Moderator of the Uniting Church. He now describes himself as an “unemployed musician”. He is a widower with three children and three grandchildren, and has a special fondness for our South Coast, having first been taken down there at the age of six months. He returns to the South coast regularly.
Don’s interests include the Uniting Church, astronomy, the environment – with a special interest in the River Murray, jazz, and walking as far and as often as possible. His talk arises out of his volunteer work for the South Australian Jazz Archive and relates to an interesting episode in Adelaide during World War Two. He has labelled it “Dancing with the Yanks”.
