Social Evening with David Gooley, Rotary Club of Mitcham
Calperum, Past, Present, and Future
Located 15kms from Renmark near the River Murray, Calperum Station is a conservation property of approximately 240,000 hectares of protected landscape. In the early pastoral life of South Australia, Calperum was a large sheep station, privately operated on a lease from the South Australian Govt. until 1992. The pastoral lease is now held in trust by the Australian Govt. and managed by the Australian Landscape Trust which works towards the restoration and sustainable management of the property.
There are 3 areas of different vegetation on the property. All 3 have been degraded by the introduction of the sheep grazing and the removal of the tree canopy on the Semi-Arid Woodland by the various leaseholders since the 1840’s.
Rotary was introduced to the property in 1996 and has continued to provide a source of volunteer labour. David first visited Calperum in 2009 with a group of Rotarians and has visited regularly since, assisting in the revegetation program of the Semi-Arid Woodland and the Floodplain area of the River Murray.
Members of the Rotary Club of Adelaide have also visited Calperum on a number of occasions, under the guidance of Convenor, Bryan Harris, who, along with David, is also a member of the Rotary District 9510 Calperum & The Environment Committee (CATE).
One of those visits was to plant native species in May 2018, on Rob Thomas President’s Weekend visit to the Riverland. Bryan recently reported that the plantings have done exceptionally well, achieving an 80% success rate. Some 8 members and their partners from Adelaide visited in May and had a good time. Adelaide Rotarians are again invited on another District Rotary visit, planned for October 29th to 31st.
The time spent there is between 3 to 5 days in comfortable accommodation, in great company and in a wonderful environment.
