"Longing for freedom behind the wall"
My personal journal from the GDR to Australia
Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realise I'm really here! I’m in Australia.
Born in 1967 behind the wall, the socialist GDR, my world was still very limited in every way. Born into a dictatorial system that supposedly had to protect the people who lived in it from the evil world of the class enemy, the capitalism. But barbed wire, death strips, shoot-to-kill orders were more of a warning to all people who wanted to leave the country…
I had a free and wonderful childhood, I was happy!
This changed when, at the age of 16, I was picked up for the first time by the police for state security and interrogated without my parents' knowledge. I would like to share my story with you. A story driven by my deep longing for freedom, for travel and free education.
Escaping with my 12-month-old daughter was the beginning of my great adventure. How, after 35 years, my greatest dream of emigrating to Australia came true, I will share all this with you this evening and finally celebrate with you my arrival here in Adelaide, my new home.
